History of the 1948-1954 Jaguar XK120:

The Jaguar XK120 is a sports car manufactured by Jaguar between 1948 and 1954. The XK120 was launched at the 1948 London Motor Show as a testbed and show car for the new Jaguar XK engine designed by Jaguar Chief Engineer William Heynes. The car caused a sensation, which persuaded Jaguar founder and Chairman William Lyons to put it into production.

 

The XK120 was ultimately available in three versions or body styles, first as an open 2-seater then as a fixed head coupe (FHC) from 1951, and finally as a drophead coupe (DHC) from 1953. All XK120s had independent Heynes designed torsion bar front suspension, semi-elliptic leaf springs at the rear, recirculating ball steering, telescopically adjustable steering column, and all-around 12-inch drum brakes.

 

Fast, beautiful, and successful on the race track, for many the Jaguar XK120 was the ultimate production sports car of the 1950s. The public clearly thought so, as 12,078 XK120s were sold, which was far beyond the company’s wildest expectations.

 

The XK120 is still a quick car and can easily keep up with modern traffic, although the drum brakes have to work hard to stop the car from speed. Still immensely popular, it’s hard to say whether the wonderful engine or the lovely lines are more responsible for its enduring popularity. The wonderful exhaust note, of course, certainly plays a role as well.
